Pay Your Zakat

Apply to request Zakat for a needy person

How should Zakat be distributed in Islam?

First of all, Zakat distribution is governed by the Quran and Sunnah of the Prophet (PBUH). People eligible to receive Zakat are indicated in Surah 9 (Attawbah) verse 60:

  1. The poor (al-fuqarâ’), meaning low-income or indigent.
  2. The needy (al-masâkîn), meaning someone who is in difficulty.
  3. Zakat administrators.
  4. Those whose hearts are to be reconciled, meaning new Muslims and friends of the Muslim community.
  5. Those in bondage (slaves and captives.
  6. The debt-ridden.
  7. In the path of Allah
  8. The wayfarer, meaning those who are stranded or traveling with few resources.

Therefore, here are some conditions that need to be respected when distributing the Zakat

  • Zakat cannot be given or used for the construction of a masjid, madrassah, hospital, a well, a bridge or any other public amenity (certain conditions and exceptions apply)
  • Poor students can be given a bursary from Zakat.
  • If an agent is given Zakat for distribution, and he does not distribute it, then the Zakat will not be regarded as fulfilled, and the sin of not discharging the obligatory duty of Zakat will remain a burden on whom it was obligatory.
  • It is preferred that the Zakat is distributed locally in the same country where it was collected.

How to pay your Zakat?

There are 4 methods to pay the Zakat at Al-Madinah center:
1-Cash at the center (in the box of Zakat)
2-Debit/credit cards at the center (using the tablet available at the center, with the “Zakat” option)
3-A cheque that you give to the personnel in the center (mentioning that th purpose is Zakat)

How Zakat is distributed at Al-Madinah Center?

At Al-Madinah Center, we receive many requests to benefit from Zakat and Sadaqa. However, not all the requests are eligible or fall in the eight categories mentioned above. Therefore, we have established a standardized process to accept request for support that are eligible as Zakat recipients.

  1. We first collect some details about the person requesting the Zakat. These details involve immigration status, social status, number of children, amount and source of income, special health condition, …
  2. Then, we rank the requests by priority and emergency and remove the non-valid request. The non-valid requests might be valid for Sadaqa donations but not Zakat donations.
  3. Finally, we distribute the available collected Zakat to the valid requests based on their rank and emergency.

In order to organize the requests, we created an online form that is filled for each request (link to the form). One can fill the form at home before coming to the center. People must come to the center in order to receive any help. We can not send help by mail (except for limited situations)

Why Zakat is distributed here in Montreal?

Even in Montreal, there are many needy people who are eligible as Zakat recipients. It is also true that here in Canada, the life standard are better than other countries. For example, we receive cases of permanent sick, paralyzed, permanent medication, poor students, etc…
Therefore, we adopt the standards mentioned above to distribute the Zakat in the better way possible.
